Cancer Home
Cancer is a worldwide health problem composed of a class of diseases or
disorders characterized by uncontrolled division of cells. The ability of these
cells to spread, either by direct growth into adjacent tissue through invasion,
or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis (where cancer cells are
transported through the bloodstream or lymphatic system) affects people of all
ages, especially the elderly. Cancer is one of the highest causes of death in
developed countries.
There are several types of cancer. The severity of symptoms depends on the
character of the malignancy and whether there is metastasis. Histologic
examinations of tissue by a pathologist is required to gain a definitive
diagnosis. These tissues are usually obtained by biopsy or surgery. Most
cancers can be treated and some cured, dependinging on where it is located and
the specific type of Cancer. When the Cancer is diagnosed, it is usually treated
with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Cancer treatments
are becoming more specific for the type of cancer pathology and drugs that target
specific cancers already exist for several cancers. The results of Cancer if
untreated, may eventually cause illness and death. Although this is not always
the case.
